How to calculate Volume
Volume conversion is essential in cooking, bartending, chemistry, and everyday life. The US uses cups, pints, quarts, and gallons for cooking; the rest of the world predominantly uses millilitres and litres.
Metric: 1000 ml = 1 litre. Simple, clean, no exceptions.
US cooking measurements: 3 tsp = 1 tbsp, 2 tbsp = 1 fl oz, 8 fl oz = 1 cup, 2 cups = 1 pint, 2 pints = 1 quart, 4 quarts = 1 gallon.
Cross-system: 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres, 1 cup = 236.6 ml, 1 fl oz = 29.57 ml, 1 litre = 4.227 cups.
Note: UK (imperial) pints and gallons differ from US measures — a UK pint is 568 ml vs the US pint of 473 ml. This calculator uses US customary units.
Volume matters in medicine too: liquid medications are dosed in ml, and pharmacy errors from unit confusion can be dangerous. Bakers scaling recipes between metric and US measurements use volume converters constantly. This tool covers nine common volume units for all your conversion needs.
