How to calculate Tip
Tipping customs vary by country, but in the United States, Canada, and many other places, leaving a gratuity for service staff is standard practice. Getting the calculation right — especially when splitting the bill — can be tricky without a calculator.
The formula is straightforward: Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100). The total is Bill + Tip. If splitting between several people, divide the total by the number of diners.
For a $85 dinner with an 18% tip split two ways: tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30, total = $100.30, each person pays $50.15.
Common tip percentages: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, 25% or more for exceptional service. Some people tip based on the pre-tax amount; others on the post-tax total — both are acceptable.
For large parties, restaurants often add an automatic 18–20% gratuity. Always check your bill before tipping to avoid double-tipping.
This calculator handles any tip percentage and any number of diners, making group dinners and business lunches stress-free.
